How the forecasts work

Each match is forecast with a Poisson-style scoring model: it looks at how teams have actually created and conceded chances recently, adjusts for home advantage and the run of fixtures around the match, and turns that into a likely score and a set of win, draw and loss probabilities. There is no inside information and no tipster – only evidence from matches already played.

A forecast is published before kick-off and kept up to date as team news comes in, right up until the match starts. Once it starts, the forecast is locked, and once the match finishes we grade it against the real result – a hit, a near miss or a miss – in public, on the match’s own page. The record is there to check, not to take our word for.

Frequently asked questions

What is MatchOptics?
MatchOptics is a football forecasts site. For every match of the leagues we cover, we publish a forecast before kick-off — a likely score and a set of win/draw/loss probabilities — and grade it against the final result once the match finishes, in public.
How are the forecasts made?
A Poisson-style scoring model, fitted to recent team strengths, home advantage and schedule context, turns those into a score and a set of probabilities for each match. It is evidence from the matches already played, not a guess or a tip from a person.
When is a forecast published, and can it change?
Every forecast is published ahead of kick-off and refreshed as team news and form come in, right up to kick-off. Once a match starts, its forecast is locked: what you see after kick-off is what was published before it.
What is the difference between Fan and Pro?
Fan is free for every signed-in reader: forecasts, live tables, the track record and the Prediction Game. Pro ($10 a month) adds Best picks — one standout pick per match of the day — and removes the Prediction Game's daily forecast limit.
What is the Prediction Game?
The Prediction Game is MatchOptics' own competition: readers forecast a match's exact score before kick-off, earn points for a correct score or winner, and compete in rounds for prizes. It is free to play; Pro removes the daily entry limit.
Which leagues does MatchOptics cover?
The Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1, the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, the AFC Champions League Elite, and a growing list of others — see the full list on this page and on the Leagues page.
